Overview
In a crucial step toward advancing digital safety in civil society, Social & Media Matters partnered with RNW Media to host a five-day intensive training in Nepal, bringing together six organizations working in high-risk, sensitive digital environments. The goal: to empower those who protect others with the skills to protect themselves.
Practical Skills for Complex Digital Threats

Through hands-on sessions and real-world simulations, participants explored critical topics such as:

  • Phishing detection and encryption basics
  • Personal digital security planning
  • Managing device loss, social engineering attacks, and identity protection
  • Strategies to counter misinformation and disinformation
  • Building strong passwords and secure communication habits
Innovative methods like games to explain social engineering and interactive threat response drills helped participants absorb and apply their learning in memorable ways.

More Than Training—A Culture of Care

Beyond technical skills, the program cultivated an environment of trust, collaboration, and shared responsibility. Participants left with not only the tools to safeguard themselves and their teams, but also a deeper commitment to creating a culture of care, safety, and mutual support across their networks.

This initiative reaffirmed that digital safety is not optional—it’s essential infrastructure for those on the frontlines of advocacy, justice, and social change.
